If any of you know of some good free sources for clip art I'd really appreciate knowing about them--in particular I'm looking for a small gift certificate and lay-a-way image preferable with transparent backgrounds. Working on a site for one of our local antique mall owners. Thanks!

I know nothing about image file formats.
BUT, one time I saved an image as .png instead of .jpg - and it turned into a "background-less" image. Woo Hoo!!!!
Now I do it using PixResizer. Its a free downloadable program, and it is SO FAST to use to resize images, but you can also choose the format to save the image as.
I do not know if it will work with all images... but its worth a try.

Thanks, y'all I'll give your suggestions a try. Not sure if the site builder software works with .png but I'll try it.
