Yep, got 'em, and I'm going to publish the name here just in case you run across her: Leona Ickes, in New Jersey. If she charges items from your store, don't ship them and refund her charges immediately! And then call your cc host to report them. I reported her to Propay and they were very grateful that I called them.
She kept purchasing men's fragrances from my store, a little bit more each time within a span of 10 days. When the second transacdtion came in from her, I was worried, but went through with the order. By the third transaction I was highly suspicious, and by the fourth transaction at nearly $400 in merchandise, I finally said "enough" and reported her. She would always use the same name, shipping address and out-of-service telephone number, but a different email address. When I went in to view my ProPay transactions, I could see that the last four digits of the cc number were different each time. Dead give away!
Yes I will lose out on those first couple of transactions when the real card owners finally catch up and report the fraudulent charges (I'd shipped them thinking they were legit at the time). Oh well, live and learn.
That's a first for me, and believe me I will be looking for patterns in every credit card transaction from now on. If I ever get two credit card orders close together from the same person or same address, I will be checking it out thoroughly before filling the order. I will probably call or email the buyer to confirm their order, and ask for a photocopy of a recent credit card statement and/or credit card (both sides).
What else should I do? Anyone else experience this before? What's a good, reasonable policy for checking on the validity of credit card purchases?
Argh!

We have had this happen to us a couple of times over the years the only way that we have found to protect us from this is with paypal and or your own credit card account with your bank not propay. Paypal will protect you as long as they are a confirmed address with them our bank is the same way. Even if there is a reversal from the owners credit card company you will win and the credit card company will have to go after the criminal.
P.S. We won both times through paypal in fact when the reversal came through and they deducted the amount from our account, they fronted over $500 to our account while they researched and solved the problem. all money's where returned to us

I definitely think calling ans asking for confirmation, etc would be good. I know my husband and I often have identical debit card numbers except for the last four and expiration dates (just how small our bank is plus the reissuing from various issues).

Wholly cow! Your orders are really high dollar amount. Mine are super small, so I don't get many fraud cases. I somewhat become alarmed when the order is close to $100 let alone $800.
One thing I always do is go through all of the orders that print against my emails to make sure every invoice has been paid and that all credit cards show a zip match.
Of course that won't help you now. Honestly, it's a part of bisi's fault as well for allowing those orders to still come through. I know sellers have asked that they not come through unless payment has been made. There really should at least be a warning or have the order in red for those not paid.
The customer through Paypal might have given you her correct info for the first order, but didn't pay once she saw the shipping or something. You could even do a reverse lookup to see who has the address and get a phone number from that. Then, you could send them a bill and even send it to a collection agency for receipt.
I wonder how many other orders you've sent out without having received payment?
Sorry though. Those are some big losses.

Regarding customers using credit cards for multiple purchases w/different credit card numbers, they could be using PayPal Plug-In - I use it. It's a "masking" of your PayPal account by generating what looks like a real credit card, but in reality is only good for that one time use. So if the security gets compromised and your CC# gets stolen, it's of no use to anyone, because it's already been used.
I have been using this for over a year, gives me great peace of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about someone stealing my CC#.
I'm hoping that's what happened here but it sounds suspicious I admit. Good luck!
