Hi everyone, I am a newby on BISI and have several years experience with EBay listing through InkFrog.  After attempting to set up my account on BISI and Google, I can now understand why some people get so upset because some things simply drive them crazy.  It took five attempts (five accounts?) with Google to get a legitimate ID and Key.  BISI has not been much simpler.  I am a stickler for detail, so when I do something, I like to see the results.

I attempted to do a listing to see what it would look like, and was informed that I had to create a new category.  This was off of ROOT >.  I created a category called FABRICS since I do sell a lot of fabrics.  I listed one item and a store preview determined that it was there (not necessarily what I would want for a finished product, but it was there).  My husband questioned me about creating a category off of ROOT, when it really should be a primary category like CRAFTS or HOME AND GARDEN.  We both tried to find a list of the categories in BISI.  They do not seem to exist, however, we found a list by not signing in and clicking on shop once we reached the site.  Out of curiosity, I clicked on ANTIQUES (the first category) and lo-and-behold, there was my item.  Now, this is not an antique, but fabric by Ralph Lauren.  Many other items (rings, g-string panties, condoms, vibrators, etc.) definitely were not antiques as well but they were also under the ANTIQUE category.  I checked other categories, and they were the same way!  After looking over the list of categories, I could not find one that would work for me except for EVERYTHING ELSE and HOME AND GARDEN.

Question #1:  Can new categories be added and if so, can listings be moved from one to another?

After doing searches in the forum on "CATEGORIES" as well as reading many of the other topics, I can't help but get the feeling that this is a Google Site more than it is anything else.  I don't understand all that talk about meta tags, key words, etc.  My husband is no help here either even though he has nearly 50 years experience in automation.  He retired five years ago and much of the terminology used on the internet today is new to him, especially the HTML coding, since he was not involved in that aspect of the business and has not kept up with all other aspects as well.

Question #2:  Can you sell through BISI without having to go through all of those gyrations?  It seems that until I learn all there is to know about listing with BISI and GOOGLE, I would just be spinning my wheels and getting nowhere.

Question #3:  Can my templates and pictures that are stored in InkFrog be transferred to BISI?

I have been at this for two plus days now and I do have a listing, but it is in the wrong category.  I would appreciate any and all suggestions as to how I can list faster than one item per day.

Question #4:  Why can't you copy and past from a MS WORD document?

TIA.  FabricsLinensandMore

Hi and Welcome to BISI. Have you looked at the tutorials Tomas has for setting up a new store? There's a lot of information there. Good luck to you, this is really a great place.

Sandy,

WELCOME!!!

Take a deep breath. It does take time to figure out how you want things. If click on my logo (not the link below it) you will find that I have only 23 (I think) products listed after a few weeks. Granted, I am working hard on another store that is almost ready to debut but... no matter how novice or expert to the web you are, all new tools take time to get used to.

If I were not flat exhausted, I would give you a hand. But the tutorials that Tomas has posted are really great, as Brenda said. You can find them on your admin home page.

Now, for those of you who keep reading me post about things taking time... I don't want to hear one word!

Hello and welcome!!  It sounds like you might be getting your store categories and the global categories confused? You create your own store categories (which you name) and place your items into those for your store, but you need to select the global category (which are already named) for your item too.

Hi and welcome to BISI!

Google is a whole different can of worms outside of your BISI created website. Most of us have sold on eBay or had a store there before this and have become our own webmasters here. We get to share our learning experiences with one another here on the boards!

BISI is the skeleton for your shop. You flesh it out by adding  the look and products and then promote it. Google is the search engine that promotes your items. Try SEO- search engine optimization as an internet search to see some of the vocabulary used. Boy, I am finding out how much I don't know!

I  have about 10 fabric pieces listed. Your fabric should be in Crafts in the Global (BISI) Categories-then there is is a Fabric subcategory . You choose one of these Globals when listing. You can't add Global (BISI) categories. As for Antiques- it may be the default because it is the top Global category and you didn't choose another, maybe? Besides Global Categories, you  have your own set of store Categories and this is probably what they wanted you to enter/add. I can see how you can be frustrated, because there is a learning curve to building a website that is your creation! Check out that Tutorial at the top of the BISI Discussions area.It is great!!

Hope I helped with some of your questions! Because of so many nuances with website building your being detail oriented is a real plus! Good luck and stop by on the boards anytime with questions, comments or new info for us!

Thanks to all who responded.  We have viewed the four videos from Tomas on how to get started but I am still very confused.  I will try to list a few more items and maybe I will learn more as I go.  I still am not sure how to set up my catagories on my store front page but I will keep looking.

Sandy

Store categories- I regret having so many categories in my store with no items showing. I only have a limited amount of time to work here and I am not getting as much done as anticipated. I will probably take some off and add them again later.

Make a list of all store categories that you may want to list things in and only add 5 to your store that you will list in first..

Remember that you can use sub-categories in your store.

I may have Quilting as my main category

Then

  • Quilting patterns
  • Quilting books
  • Quilting magazines

If I were selling vintage glassware I may have:

Art Glass

  • American
  • Scandinavian
  • Italian
  • French

Kitchen Glassware

  • Pyrex
  • Fire King
  • Federal

If you need help with categories- tell us where you are stuck. Maybe someone can help!

To add store categories....

Click on your "categories" tab.
Click on the "add new categories" link to add main level categories.

To add sublevel categories....click on the green arrow in front of the category you would like to add them to, and then click on the "add new categories" link.

If you want to add another level of categories in that subcategory, follow the above instructions for that one.

If you have more problems, try to be as specific about them as you can, as it will help us to help you a bit better.
