Most of my items ship via media mail or first class - not priority or parcel post. It would be nice if these options were plainly listed.

I have posted media mail shipping on each page, but would hate for a customer to get confused at checkout and assume otherwise.

If media mail were listed, might I then... post the weight per item, post the shipping charge per pound and the shopping cart figure it up?

The problem with allowing media mail on calculated shipping is that it is applied to all products.. A customer will be able to choose media mail for a shipping method even if the item doesn't qualify to be sent media mail.

Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to use flat shipping for books.

I was under the impression the "merchant" would have to offer media mail before the customer could choose it. Virtually all of my items ship via media mail - unless light enough for first class or the customer wants to upgrade to priority.

The lack of media mail being offered has been the predominant reason I have not really pursued a shop, despite selling online for 8 years.

I'd guess the problem is with the USPS' API (I guess that's the right term). I had a shipping module that used it on an old shop of mine and it was all or nothing (meaning Media would be an option whether it was allowed for the product or not) but I really don't have any idea how flexible it is on the backend.

It would be pretty handy to be able to specify on the seller backend which shipping options to offer to each item.

poopsheet, you're exactly right.

Here's a proposal that should work.

On the add/edit product page, we can add a checkbox that will allow you to specify if the item qualifies for media mail. If all the items in a buyers cart are media mail, then media will be displayed along with the other shipping options. Otherwise, it will only include the standard (parcel, priority, express). This should be relatively easy to accomplish.
