I'm a newbie...  I was checking my store out the way a potential customer would and I realized that the shipping cost is not displayed.  I have been using fixed rates to ease the shopping experience for customers, I personally would not want to have to add the item to my cart to find out what shipping ran.  Any thoughts?  I'm sure this has been discussed but I just thought I might throw it out there again!

Different vendors handle this differently. I've read that some will state the shipping costs in their descriptions. That would work well if your shipping never changed. If it did, you'd not only have to change it in the item's admin but you'd have to remember to change it in the descriptions as well. Otherwise, that's a pretty good solution.

I personally have chose to use calculated shipping. There is a shipping estimator on my cart page where a customer will put in their zip code and they can see their total shipping charges for all their items. Because of the nature of my products, most customers buy several items at once and this works really well for me.

Several places throughout the stores, I have the statement that "shipping is calculated in the shopping cart based on weight and destination". I think that gives people a clue that my shipping is reasonable. It doesn't seem to be a problem for the customers because sales have been steady lately. If a customer shops on the web much, they will know that most commerce stores (not auction sites) do not declare shipping until you are in the cart page. This is because (obviously) the more you buy, the less the shipping is per item.... in a fair, weight based system anyway.

So that's how I handle it. Maybe others will share what they choose to do and why.
