Hello.
I have the url www.GirlsHorseClothes.com which currently forwards to my Ebay store. Ive been including the url in all my communications with my buyers for about 18 months, including on a card in their packages.
So..... Im planning to switch it to forward to my site here..... but I find Im dragging my feet on doing it. I cant really figure out WHY.
I have over 100 listings, and I have things set up "well enough" to "go live" - but I keep thinking "not yet".
One thing I am going to do today is list a couple things for 2$ and ask a few people to try out my site, including purchasing a 2$ item to make sure it all works. After that, there shouldnt be a reason not to GO FOR IT and transfer the url, AND, start including something in my ebay packages announcing it.... or at least a coupon to entice shopping.
My site doesnt look the way Id like it to - but I really don't think THAT is why I'm hesitating.
Do you think people expect more when they buy from an independent site than from an ebay listing? I think thats part of my hold up, BUT, on the other hand, I feel I do package things professionally, etc.
I dont know what it is!
Any thoughts for me? Any stories on how YOU made the leap? Anything you wish you had done differently at that point? Anything at all really!
Thanks so much, Cindy
Cindy

| I did the same thing before I finally closed my ebay store. I don't know if you've ever heard of flylady, (an online organzational and motivational system) but she would say it is your perfectionism that is standing in your way. I wanted everything to be exactly perfect before I started directing customers here. I finally realized that my eBay situation was FAR from perfect, and I would never get anywhere if I didn't just jump in and try. It was really hard to keep listing in the first few weeks when I didn't have any sales. Once I got that first one, I was SO motivated to keep going. To quote Flylady again, "just jump in where you are". If it really doesn't work, you can always change it back or try something else, but I'm betting you'll be pleasantly surprised. You'll never know if you don't try! Good luck with your new store! Patti

| I know it's a scary thing to try something new. You have been with ebay for a while, so you get used to things. There is a quote that I have posted in mine and my husbands office on the cork board and it reads, "The most unfortunate thing that happens to a person who fears failure is that he limits himself by becoming afraid to try anything new. " Give yourself a chance. You can always go back. I will be closing my store very soon, but listing auctions and will note them to see my about me page which has my bisi site as one of my favorite links ( provided by ebay, by the way ), so I'm sure its allowed. Good luck and keep smiling

| Jackie, The eBay links policy changed effective in July. You can't have any outside links anymore! If someone reports you, they can shut you down. In typical eBay fashion, they changed the rule but not the layout of the "about me" section, so you can still get in trouble without realizing it. You can't even have your email address or phone number in an auction listing anymore. An insert in the package or an email outside the eBay message system is about all that is left to let customers know where to find you. I'm so glad I left when I did! Patti

I agree, it is not a easy leap to make, but you do reach a point where you just have too. 2 weeks ago I had 300 items on Ebay, now I only have 100, all store items. But it is still hard to make the final plunge. I will start listing auctions on Thursday but my store items will be gone by the end of the month and my store subscription on Ebay will be canceled. I am using my store listings to drive buyers to BISI with a picture in my listings. It is just a JPG, and is not clickable. I have my BISI store in my favorite links and one mention in my about me page text.
I have moved my inventory to 4 different sites, just to try and generate traffic and more links that will lead to here. I will be launching an email campaign this weekend, too.
I did try to get support to provide details on the new link policy and the condensed response was no comment, links policy release on July 17, less restricitve for a few, more restrictive for the majority. Time will of course reveal full story.

I agree about the EBay guidelines/policies as they're written that they are confusing. I just read both policies for links in descriptions and links on the Me pages. They seem to contradict. One place says no outside links, yet in the Me page guidelines it says you can link to your own website as long as you're not offering the same merchandise for less. I was advised to lower my prices in EBay listings by one penny to avoid that rule and that's what I do. EBay continues to fine tune and fine tune their rules so much that it's difficult to keep up with. Not sure whether I should leave things as is or just eliminate the Me page completely. I just know I'm sick of EBay except for using it to list a few things here and there to promote my store here.

| When you go to the about me page and you go to create it or edit it, the section that says "favorite Links" has the rules on inserting other links on about me page. Anyway, here it is. http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/contextual/listing-aboutme.html I just put my webpage that doesnt sell anything on there, but directs people to the bisi store. Not sure if that is still not allowed, but either way, this should be my last week with my store being open anyway.

| I gave eBay up also. The fees and the policies, rules, feedback, etc. keep changing and I just can't keep up with it. The costs were getting to be to much and the customers were thinning out there. I have don't okay here for the three weeks (?) I have been open. Maybe you could keep a little on eBay for the exposure and when you make sales send them a thank you note with your new url address on it.
