I've been gone for a while... Mom broke her hip... my cat had hip surgery... and hubby has been in the hospital TWICE for pneumonia... My store here just got pushed to the bottom of the pile of "to-do's"...
I think I have the 3 of them at least somewhat on the mend, so now it's time for me again....
Here's what I want to do... and I just can't seem to figure it out. I feel like a total dufus...
I want to charge Flat Rate shipping... $3.25 for the first item and then $.25 for each additional item.
I'd also like to make domestic (US) shipping free over $50, and can't figure out if I can do that, either. If I can't do that it's not the end of the world... But I can't even figure out how to set up the basic shipping. I thought it would be simple... $3.00 handling charge and then $.25 per item... But I'm stumped about what to fill into which spaces..
If I look at the shipping options for a product, here's what I see:
Domestic Flat Rate Shipping Fees
$____ flat rate fee
$____ additional shipping fee (if left blank will charge full price)
Domestic Handling Fees
$____ first item
$____ additional handling fee (if left blank will charge full price)
So what do I fill in where? I don't understand the statement in parenthesis... Full price as opposed to ???
I thought it would be $3.00 handling fee for first item... but what is the additional handling fee??
And I thought $.25 for the flat rate fee.... but what is the additional shipping fee??
When I set up a couple of items that way and then tested it out, the shipping charge was $6.50... and it should have been $3.50. So I tried something else and ended up with $.50 instead of $3.50
I'm sure this is really simple, but my brain is just not getting it.
Can someone please point me in the right direction...
Shirley

I assume the first line is for the shipping if the item is bought alone. The second line is for if the item is bought "in addition" to something else.
So, you want the FLAT RATEs to be 3$ shipping, 25 cents additional, 0 handling (is its all included in your shipping)
"as opposed to what" - means if you leave that blank, and someone buys 2 things, they will be charged the full shipping amount for each one, rather than a lower rate for the "additional" item.

| Just make sure the amounts are in the spaces correctly. I have mine set up that way and when I tested them, they were fine. On the additional items I put it in as 0.01 as opposed to just .01 Shipping fee is postage, Handling fee is any additional you want to charge for your time, packing materials, etc. If it's just one big blob just use the shipping section If you want to make shipping free over $50.00 you will have to make a coupon and post the code for them to use...

ok.... I almost think I have it...
You're life-savers!!!!!
So basically I could just ignore the handling charge part if I follow correctly???
Then, I would enter $3.25 Flat Rate... and $0.25 for the additional shipping fee...
And what that would do would be to make shipping $3.25 if they buy only 1 item, and add $0.25 for each additional item... Amazing how much sense it makes AFTER you have it explained to you...
So could I do the same thing for International Shipping too???
But there's more than one rate... ugh...
So is there a way to make it work for International shipping? or not???
I'm sorry to be such a pain... I surely do appreciate the help!

I don't do international shipping but I think it's not quite as easy to figure out so someone will have to help you there.

International shipping is difficult because you only get to input one value. So shipping to Canada is charged the same as shipping to Australia.
I use the calculated shipping instead of flat rate and it works well most of the time, but after the last rate increase it's got bugs. The flat rate envelope is showing as an option for all orders, regardless of the size and the old pre-increase rates are showing on the cart page when the customer wants to calculate their shipping. This is causing me some problems so I will probably disable international sales until they are fixed. I hate to do that because I usually have 1 0r 2 per week, but I can't keep paying the additional shipping out of my pocket. I turned in a support ticket last week and I'm really hoping Tomas comes through quickly on this one.
So, depending on how much international shipping you do, you will probably have to overcharge Canadian customers or switch to calculated (assuming it gets fixed). Sometimes I throw in some freebies if the shipping seems to be overcharged. The customers seem to like that, but that's assuming that they complete the order with the high shipping in the first place.

| I am a newbie here and have a quick question along the lines here. If I offer free shipping over $25, then I need to post a coupon code in the item description? Is there anywhere else to post this coupon code so buyers don't miss it or forget it? Thanks, Barbara http://www.familypartysupplies.com

Welcome to bisi, Barbara. That's basically the only way to implement a shipping discount like you have described. If you used custom templates, you could also put the code on the cart page as a reminder but the customer would still have to remember to enter it in the coupon field on the checkout page.
