Greetings!

Can anyone direct me to the first step in editing the custom templates.  I have downloaded the templates, but am totally lost from there....

I am not computer stupid, but can't make heads or tails how to proceed.  I tried making small changes in wysiwyg online editor, but when pasted into the template section here, nothing showed up except error message although it looked ok in the wysiwyg previes.

I have tried searching the topics, but still can't find step 1.

Sure would appreciate some hand holding here or am I just better off to hire this done?

Thanks much for your advice and help.

Sandra

This would (in my opinion) be the easiest way to start and implement some minor changes such as colors and images. You will need an editor that lets you create css style sheets.

The sample templates are linked to two bisi style sheets. Copy the style sheet called "darkblue.css" (http://stores.mybisi.com/Templates/01/_css/darkblue.css) and make a new one with a new name. Delete the link in the template to "darkblue" and add a new link to the new one you made. Then change the background colors and image backgrounds in the new style sheet to whatever you wish. You will see the changes reflected in your template when you preview it if it is linked properly. Upload the new style sheet in your bisi custom files upload. Be sure that your templates are linked to the new location of the style sheet.

If you don't change any of the html on the template, you shouldn't get any errors in displaying. And if you don't change the link to the bisi layout style sheet, everything should stay "in place". It's not as difficult as it seems at first and you may have to do some researching if you don't know some of the basic css elements. But it's pretty easy to figure out that "background" in any element is either color or image and can be changed. It's a good place to start in customizing.

This is how I started anyway and I didn't know much about css OR html. Anyone else have suggestions?

Have fun!

Hi Sandra! Welcome to BISI.

Do you know basic HTML? If not, I would recommend figuring it out and then looking again at the templates. All the color is in the CSS files as Gayla said. It is easiest to change the CSS files.

There is code in the template files that must be used to make your site function. It is all the If/Then statements you see in the code.

I can not hold one's hand. I just do not have the time to do that. But I do think anyone can do it if they really want to put in the time to figure it out. Gayla has done a wonderful job with both her sites. She did not do it overnight, she plugged away at it. Outside of a couple of us designers, I don't know anyone else who knows how these templates work at this time that could walk you through the process.

One tip though, don't use a WYSIWYG editor. It will not work well for you on the BISI templates (IMO).

Good luck!!!
