Okay.... here is where I am at with things... (still needing help).

I know enough to be able to take code and make minor adjustments and changes. But I don't know enough to be able to start from scratch. When I was at eBay, I knew nothing. When I was at WP, I had access to my header, sidebar, and footer, so I learned how to make the changes I wanted to make. (I had the code available to me, so I was able to figure out what I needed to do to make adjustments.)

With the custom templates here, it is completely blank. I'm not wanting to start from scratch to do a whole new look for my store. I just want to make a few slight changes to what I already have. To start with, I'd like to add my links to my custom pages, so customers can click on them. I know about "viewing the source" of a webpage, but when I do this for my store and then put the code in to see it, the template does not show with the rest. How do I get "everything" including the template?? How do I get my code for my page as is, so I can just fine tune things a bit without starting over completely??

All help truly appreciated...(not trying to be a bother with all of this).

Thanks....Nikki

Hi Nikki.
This is what I did, maybe it'll help. I downloaded the sample template files to my computer. I opened the file that I wanted to change. It opened in a browser window so I copied the source there and pasted it into my html editor. Since I'm still learning all this stuff, I had to study the code for a while to figure out what changes I wanted to make. After changes, I pasted the new code into the custom pages part of my store admin. Then when I previewed the store, the changes were there. But doing it this way, I still went to the text edit page to put in my own text. For example, make sure that the changes you make to the product details page are not product specific because it will be the template that will showcase ALL your products. Add the actual product details from the add product page.

Keep in mind that I am a beginner myself and may be doing some things the long way. But I've always been a do-it-yourselfer and I love to figure things out!

jubilee &bearridge

I am following this discussion because I am at the same level that bearridge is. I can do what she can do as far as html etc and I am at a standstill .

I can't even get to the sample files. I get a black screne with writing at the top that makes no sense. I can't seem to open the zip file that is supposed to be there. I have my domain and had enabled custom templates.

What am I doing wrong?

That's odd. When I click on the link for sample files, my computer opens a download dialog box immediately and I just tell it where to save the files. I'm running XP with Firefox browser. It sounds like a computer or browser setting thing to me. Maybe someone else can tell you why you can't download?

Well, I downloaded the coffeecup editor and it looks like quite a bit to figure it out too. Took a look at my HTML 4 for Dummies book and it's got CSS too. Looks like enough in there for me to figure things out eventually, but not enough time right now.

So...I decided to put my info from my "custom pages" directly on my home page for now. If anyone would like to take a look and give me your input, that would be great. Basically I need to know from a buyer's viewpoint the two following things.
     1. Does everything flow in a reasonably nice order or should things be arranged a bit differently?
     2. Is this too much info and therefore overwhelming to a buyer?

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me with the "custom" stuff. I will get to it eventually.

Nikki
