I often got customer emails asking my phone number so they could give me their credit card # to make cc payments. Currently my store sales is not enough to afford $30 or so monthly fee for credit card payment process.
Do you think adding cc payment can help store sales?

I get those calls occasionally also. There are just some people who do not want to enter cc info on the internet. I probably run 2-3 phone orders a month through my merchant account. I also have local customers occasionally who want to use a credit card.
My merchant account is just $6 per month and the rates are very similar to paypal. The vendors who "rep" merchant accounts are very competitive and they will often negotiate with you in order to get your business. You should check around some. A friend of mine got a REALLY good merchant contract because she just kept telling the guy that she couldn't afford it and he kept making a better offer.
Make sure you know what the rates are for a telephone transaction (where the card is not present). It will be higher than the rates that they probably advertise. There will probably be a per transaction fee. You should know what that is. Also, be sure that they understand you are not using the account for internet transactions, just for phone orders. It shouldn't matter that the customer found you on the internet, as long as the transaction is taking place over the phone.
You will also be expected to either rent a card reading machine or buy one. BUT... some banks will still let you telephone the info in to the bank if you don't have a machine. Ask if you can phone in the transaction info. The rates for phoned in transactions will also be higher than uploaded transactions but it may keep you from having to buy or rent a card reader machine.
You might ask your local bank if they have a program for a low volume merchant account.
Having said all that, I understand that with authorize.net you can run phone orders or walk-in sales through them as well as the internet orders. I looked at their fees once and I'm pretty sure it was less than $30 month.
