Does anyone know how google checkout works?  I'm thinking of getting it and when I went to the sign in page, it asked for my credit card info and other info.  Anyway, I canceled it because I was not sure and it was not too clear on the website.

Do you need to be a merchant or have an id or something?  If someone pays thru googlecheckout, what are the options for me to get paid, credit card only?  Because I have never taken a credit card payment, nor know how to.

Can you have googlecheckout and have people pay with paypal?

I've never even bought anything thru googlecheckout myself, so I dont even know.

From what I read, alot of people feel more confident purchasing thru google checkout, so I am considering getting it.

So can anyone help me with this info?

thanks in advance,

Jacki

You have to sign up for google checkout.  Go to google google checkout and it will take you through the steps you need to sign up and you will get a number and code to put in your store.  I have just recently signed up for google checkout so I really know very little about it, but I do know payments go directly to the checking account that you link it to.  Sorry wish I could help a bit more!

Google checkout is wonderful! I'm always thrilled when a customer uses them. It can be confusing at first, but once you're set up, it is simple and easy to use. When you register, you get a merchant id to add to the checkout information here. You can still accept PayPal if someone chooses that, but they do not pay with paypal through google checkout. When someone pays for a purchase, you get an email from google checkout. You then go to your order, charge the person's credit card with a click, and ship the item. The money, less the google checkout fee, which is lower than PayPal's but I don't remember the exact amount, is then deposited into the bank account you registered with, in a day or so. There is no "21 day hold", and they don't meddle in your business!

Thanks for this explanation

From what I understand (including what Patti wrote above), "google checkout" is basically another version of "Paypal" - without the account to keep funds in.

Google "processes the credit card payment" (just as Paypal does). Plus, a person can have their info saved and then only need to enter their email address to make payments, rather than type in their cc numbers and address (just like Paypal).

Essentially (again, just like paypal), a customer pays GOOGLE with their cc, and Google then pays you - by deposit to a bank account. Unlike Paypal, there isnt that middle step of the money sitting in an account with Google, so there is no "paying with existing funds" - the funds just go to your checking account.

I wasnt sure about some of it either.... but I found this which was very helpful...
http://checkout.google.com/support/sell/ - both the "overview" and the "your money" sections.

AND - I just VERIFIED MY ACCOUNT! Yeah!!! (same deal like paypal where they send a tiny deposit and you have to look it up with your bank)

I would really LOVE to use google checkout but I just can't see myself copying and pasting addresses into a postage/label printing program. Paypal really spoils me with their shipping tool.

... sigh. I guess I'll just have to wait for Tomas to add a shipping/postage function to bisi before I accept google checkout. He has said that's in the future plans. I just seriously hope that it's more streamlined than the invoice printing function.

Ya, I dont like that part of selling on amazon - BUT - I do like a lot of other things about selling on amazon. So I deal with the cutting and pasting )

--Im pretty sure you can upload a spreadsheet into paypal multiorder shipping. I havnt found a way to download a spreadsheet of order info from Amazon (I dont have a merchant account there of any kind). But, assuming we can import a spreadsheet either from Google Checkout or from here, it might be worth the time to figure out/set it all up rather than copying and pasting/typing in the address info

(MIGHT - I havnt even thought through what the process would be - might not be any kind of savings unless there were a good number to print at a time..... Ill worry about that when I get there!)

================
Anyway - Im gonna accept google check out - BUT - maybe Ill make paypal more obvious/prefered because of the ease of shipping.

We shall see - I havnt even switched my url to my site yet, let alone have a sale!

You're right, you CAN import spreadsheets into paypal shipping. I keep one on my desktop for those occasions when a customer calls me on the phone with an order. Rather than going through the fill in the blank on paypal, I just put their info into the spread sheet and import. Rather tedious, but it doesn't happen too often.

I've been asking Tomas for ages if we could have some sort of order data export from bisi. That would certainly help the situation tremendously as well as help with bookkeeping. I think he gets tired of me asking. I average 8-10 sales per week right now and it's manageable but I just can't imagine that anyone could have a significant number of sales from bisi and be able to keep up with shipping and bookkeeping. Unless, of course, they relied on paypal for both. ... which I do.

As it is now, bisi is a wonderful option for part time stores and hobbyist, but without some improvement in order management I don't think it is a serious option for higher volume stores. I would gladly pay higher upgrade fees for the additional services.
